Employee spotlight – Charan Elamurugan

Charan is a graduate commissioning engineer at MiCiM. He joined us in 2024 after graduating from the University of Cardiff with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Why did you decide to join MiCiM? What appealed to you about the company?

“I joined MiCiM because I was really interested in the data centre industry. It’s exciting how rapidly the industry is growing and evolving to meet the increasing global demand for data storage and digital infrastructure. Being involved in projects that support critical digital services feels meaningful, and I get the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and complex systems that are essential to the modern world.

Data centres are also highly technical and fast-paced environments that combine mechanical and electrical engineering in unique ways. So the chance to work on complex, hands-on projects where I could apply my university knowledge was also a major appeal for me. MiCiM’s strong focus on MEP and commissioning stood out too, as it offers a solid technical foundation and opportunities to grow across different projects.”

What have you been up to since you joined?

“Since joining, I’ve been working on a data centre project for a key client in London which is bringing internet connectivity to the city’s train networks.

I’ve taken initiative in organising and managing commissioning paperwork, making sure everything is ready for sign-off. I’ve also been carrying out installation checks to ensure everything aligns with the design drawings. On top of that, I’ve worked closely with contractors on site to support the correct commissioning of their electrical equipment, helping to bring the data centre to a live state.”

What have you learned so far from working at MiCiM?

“Working at MiCiM has allowed me to reinforce my mechanical engineering knowledge by observing real systems like pipework and pumps in action. I’ve also started developing a strong understanding of electrical systems, which are critical in data centres. I’ve been learning how different components work together to support the facility, using drawings and comparing them to on-site installations. A recent highlight was witnessing a switchgear commissioning — it was my first time seeing this process, and I learned about dead testing and the steps involved in safely bringing electrical systems online.”

What are your favourite things about working with us?

“One of my favourite things about working at MiCiM is the hands-on learning—being on site has strengthened my mechanical engineering skills and introduced me to complex electrical systems. I enjoy the variety of tasks, from reviewing drawings to supporting commissioning. Working with experienced contractors and seeing different teams collaborate to deliver a live data centre is rewarding. The fast-paced environment keeps every project interesting and full of new challenges.”

What are your career ambitions?

“My ambition is to develop into a well-rounded engineer with strong expertise in both mechanical and electrical systems, particularly within the data centre and advanced manufacturing industries. I want to gain hands-on experience across different projects and disciplines, eventually working toward Chartered Engineer status. Ultimately, I aim to take on increasing responsibility in project management or commissioning roles, contributing to innovative and impactful engineering solutions while continuously learning and growing my technical skills.”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

“I enjoy staying active and spending time in nature — recently, I went hiking in the Peak District. I also have a strong interest in coding and enjoy working on small projects, such as creating games using Python.”
