MiCiM have been supporting AVK with senior leadership, engineering, quality control and commissioning resource to deliver an award winning first of a kind data centre power station project for a client in Ireland.

With the lack of power availability in Ireland this innovative project will be the first data centre with no grid connection to be powered by in-house gas and HVO generators with a large Battery Energy Storage System which provides the basis for the grid, deals instantly with power demand changes, and provides peak lopping to ensure the maximum efficiency of the generators. Sustainability is a major consideration for the client, with energy-efficiency a primary objective.

Designed in line with data centre tier levels of resilience this 60MW generation scheme has an N+1+1 generator capacity providing full redundancy even when one engine is being serviced and configured to provide N+N supplies to the data centres.

The Wartsila generators will run on gas in normal operation with HVO stored on site as a back up fuel giving 48 hours run time for the site.

There were many technical challenges along the way as is to be expected with a ground-breaking project and services like instrument and starting compressed air and lubricating oil systems which are not usual for data centre installations.

With no grid connection, the commissioning strategy had to accommodate the need to start with commissioning at a LV level, bringing safety and engine starting systems live prior to starting the MV generation. The commissioning is being delivered with the standard tagging type systems employed in data centre delivery.

As of summer 2026, project construction is largely complete with Level 2 commissioning underway and first engine run coming up soon. Although further challenges are practically a certainty, the whole team are focused on the successful delivery of this innovative project.
